Sunyoung SEO, 서선영, Soprano

Korean soprano Sunyoung Seo won the 2011 Tchaikovsky Competition, one of the three biggest competitions worldwide. In 2010, she won the Franciscan International Vocal Competition in Barcelona and the Maria Carras Grand Prize in Athens, Greece, which proved her great musical competence.


Under the guidance of Professor Hans Choi, Sunyoung Seo graduated in 2006 from the Lied and Oratorio Department of the Music Academy of the Korean National University of Arts. She was awarded with the second prize at the 1st ARD International Music Competition in Germany, which was held in Munich in 2009.


As DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) scholar at Robert Schumann Musikhochschule in Düsseldorf, she obtained her Konzertexamen under Professor Michael Krämer in 2011. During her time at the Robert Schumann Hochschule, the aspiring soprano laid out the foundations of her future career through performing numerous roles such as Contessa Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro) and Angelica (Sour Angelica). She also performed solo concert in Düsseldorf and Bordeaux. She was also selected as the best soprano of Nordrhein-Westfalen in 2011.
In the season 2011/12 she made her European debut as part of the ensemble at Theater Basel. Until 2015 she has been singing the title roles in Rusalka, Carmen (Micaëla), La vida Breve (Salud), Katja Kabanova (Katja), Amelia - Un ballo in Maschera (Amelia), Otello (Desdemona), Idomeneo (Elettra), Lohengrin (Elsa), and Eugene Onegin (Tatiana).


From the season 2015/16 she has worked as freelancer soprano, singing Katja Kabanova at Hamburgische Staatsoper and the title Role in Rusalka in Seoul. After performing as Elsa (Lohegrin) in Seoul, the Korean soprano made her highly-acclaimed UK debut as Liu in Turandot for Opera North in Spring 2017. In April 2017, Sunyoung Seo had her debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Ortlinde in Walküre, directed by Götz Friedrich.


Seo has worked with world class conductors like Valery Gergiev, Christian Thielemann, John Fiore, Axel Kober, Guerassim Voronkov, John Luther, Gabriel Felz, Enrico Delamboye, Giuliano Betta, Erik Nielsen, Rolando Garza, Thomas Gabrisch, Andrea Marcon. Among the orchestras she has collaborated with are Wiener Philharmoniker, London Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Basel Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, Radio Orchester München, Bern Symphony Orchestra, New England Symphony Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra. Performing on renowned stages around the world has helped Sunyoung Seo to build up extensive international experience: London Barbican Hall, Vienna Concert House, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, Carnegie Hall New York, Tchaikovsky Hall Moscow, Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall St. Petersburg, Theater Basel, Theater Bern, Stadtcasino Basel, NHK Hall.
